EOL Component Leaders Meeting: Synthy at Synthesis Center!
Alta BudenEvery quarter the leaders of the five EOL component groups get together to touch base face-to-face. This quarter was the first of these important gatherings to be held at the Biodiversity Synthesis Center. The leaders all caught each other up on the details of what their components have been up to and discussed some exciting goals for the future. This meeting happened to take place from August 20-22nd just around the time Photosynth was released (check out the blog post before this one) and it was discussed much at the meeting, we even tried it out and made our own synth of the meeting!
You can see everyone in attendance (sometimes twice), including: James Edwards and Breen Byrnes (EOL Secretariat), Cyndy Parr (Species Sites Group), Marie Studer (Education and Outreach Group), David Patterson and Peter Mangiafico (Biodiversity Informatics Group), Tom Garret (Scanning and Digitization Group), as well as Chuck Miller (EOL Advisor from Missouri Botanical Gardens) and Mark Westneat, Audrey Aronowsky and Darolyn Striley (Biodiversity Synthesis Group).

So is the EOL blog becoming a Windows-only site? Seriously, guys - showing a Windows-only visual in a post discussing a for now Windows-only but otherwise cool technology is semi-cool, but otherwise it’s not. Rather, it’s exclusionary. What about the people that just don’t own a Windows machine? Yep, they exist!

ps. as a Mac user it was indeed frustrating to have to go to another computer to accomplish this post, however, I have faith that Photosynth will not remain exclusive for long and have decided to be enthusiastic about as much as possible no matter what.
It is actually worth finding a PC to check it out on for now.

I love the concept of what you are trying to accomplish with this site and the idea behind Photosynth is very exciting, but I too am a little disappointed that my choice of browser (Opera) isn’t supported. I hope that you’ll be able to work with Microsoft and correct this anomoly quite soon, otherwise I fear you will alienate many people and end up undermining your own hard work on this exciting and essential project
